Thanks to all, turns out it WAS the way the compiler was aligning things.

Roger answered my next question before I could ask it - what is more
efficient on alignment.

< big  l o n g  moaning sigh > Sometimes I think I have maybe bitten off
more than I am ready for in writing SLAG, since it seems I am learning MORE
and MORE about C than I ever did. But, then I remind myself that we would not
have the LINUX kernel if Linus gave up back in 1990 ....
