I'm running Ubuntu with KDE right now. Here's the scoop as I see it (so
far, since I'm new to it still). KDE is pretty vanilla (with a default
color-change or two) and "capable" but they have obviously spent their
time on making Gnome nicely integrated. While I prefer KDE, their
implementation of the Gnome setup is quite pretty and usable. From
someone who typically does not like Gnome's look and feel, that says a lot.
Biggest problems I have with Ubuntu's Gnome impl? I find myself doing
"<ALT-F2> gg:some google search" all the time. Or any of my several
other specific web-searches, which include corporate directory lookups
using either ID, Last Name, or First Name, Firewall Ruleset Request #'s,
and other things customized to take most of the "surfing" out of my job.
Other things I miss:
* Klipper (man, I hate the whole "One Clipboard to Store Them All, and
In the Darkness Bind Them")
* K-Applets (like K-newsticker)
On nice thing is that for the most part, the clipboard is accessed with
Copy and Paste (key-sequence or menu) and not the mouse... While I love
that access, it is more difficult to explain to others.
I like the Ubuntu color-scheme, very earthy but nice. The arrival was a
nice surprise, since the Intel version includes a Live-CD version!
ps. I first told you all about Ubuntu (although probably not the first
time many of you knew about it) on the same day I ordered. When was
that? Check the archives, I don't remember. If I have time I'll
search, but I have been working for 4 hours today and yet to touch my
to-do-for-today list. ARG!
