hal hasn't touched anything i've added to fstab.

 From the fstab-sync man page:
All entries added to /etc/fstab by fstab-sync can be identified by the 
use of the option managed in the options field. This option is a no-op; 
it is only used to uniquely identify entries added by the fstab-sync 
program.

There's a ton more info in that man page about how this all works and 
how to disable HAL from touching fstab.  I think basically you either 
rely on HAL to do the right thing(tm) or you update it yourself.  My 
understanding is that you can't force HAL to do it for you.
