how do you compile a kernel module without re-compiling the whole kernel?

Which utilities specifically are you using?  I've got that card in several
of my boxes, and the afacli utility works just fine for me with a 2.6.9
kernel.

Most likely because its a different version of the module, not because of
anything else.
