Excellent, thank you very much for your reply. Things are getting
clearer for me now. I had a feeling this would be the case, but being a
newbie .... :-o

Really appreciate the feedback

Regards
Dirk

If you are trying to *pull* emails, he's right. However, if you are
trying to receive emails from outside connections on port 25, Postfix
can do this.

If you are trying to *pull* email from another pop3 or imap account, try
using Fetchmail  (freshmeat.net)

If you are *not pulling* email, tell the Novell crud to shove his
1st-level POS non-customer-oriented crap up his tailpipe. Of course,
you need something to read your mail from... but you're not getting it
there! A secretary could have sent his response, given a little backup
help to misinterpret and kludge.

Sorry. I get a little religious about support-infrastructures...
particularly when they are one of the big ideas behind "we don't want to
do that free stuff" mentality.

| He tells me I cannot receive mail without having pop3 installed on my
| linux box - can't do it with postfix alone.
| I was under the impression that I could. See his feedback below.

|
| Hi Dirk
|
| Ok, its confirmed.
| Just a little introductory and I hope this helps you.
|
| Postfix is a full-blooded MTA, similar to sendmail/exim.
| Their able to deliver mail to other hosts remote or local via the smtp
| protocol. [port 25]
| However, Postfix with its brilliant internals allows for receiving of
| local mails as well, however it cannot receive mails and download them
| remotely like how POP3/IMAP does.
| Even if you look at your Microsoft Exchange box, it would also be
| running POP3/IMAP (MUA's - mail user agents, for downloading and
| receiving of mails) and SMTP (MTA for sending of mails).
|
| [LITTLE HISTORY :]
| POP3 = Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is an application layer
| Internet standard protocol used to retrieve email from a remote server
| to a local client over a TCP/IP connection. Nearly all individual
| Internet service provider email accounts are accessed via POP3.
|
| IMAP - The Internet Message Access Protocol (commonly known as IMAP,
and
| previously called Interactive Mail Access Protocol) is an application
| layer Internet protocol used for accessing email on a remote server
from
| a local client. IMAP and POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) are the
| two most prevalent Internet standard protocols for email retrieval.
Both
| are supported by virtually all modern email clients and servers. The
| current version of IMAP, IMAP version 4 revision 1 (IMAP4rev1), is
| defined by RFC 3501.
|
| I hope this makes sense.
| My suggestion to you would be to install a POP3/IMAP Daemon.
|
| Please give me a call or send me a mail if you need further assistance
|
| Dane
