yea, thankfully its not a production box.

I had considered that it might not be SCSI at all but memory or PSU.  I'll
chuck a memtest86 floppy in there now and see what happens.

5 minutes later...

125 memory errors and counting.

at least i think i found the culprit.  thanks.
