I set up my wife's ipod on our linux box.  I don't have the procedure I
took here at work but I will try to write up something and send it in to
the sxs site and post to the list as well.  

I use gtkpod to add/remove songs and linux detects it as a mass storage
device.  I use USB to connect it instead of buying a firewire card,  One
thing I did have to do was take it to my mother in laws so I could use
her xp machine to format it for FAT.  It was just easier that way.  You
can compile apple fs support into linux and use that to access it but I
read that it is problematic.
