Might have been, I backed up all the personal files and re-installed. 
This was the only box here that had been brought up from Slack 8.x 
through all the releases to 10.0. I'm sure that there were a few 
gremlins left over from previous versions. Not being a production 
system, I never spent the time to properly maintain it.  Now at least I 
know that there are no leftover surprises.
