LDAP would seem to be your best bet.  I have looked into this
extensively, but for different purposes.

There are a couple projects which should help you out.  First off,
OpenLDAP will be at the base of any such project.  It is the LDAP engine
of choice on the Linux platform.
The other two projects to look into are a bit rough, but provide
web-interfaces for administering your addressbook:

aWebDap
~ and
Rolodap

They are both available at FreshMeat.net

I have not found a good way to hack either of them to integrate with
Authentication and Address book.  I believe I will both need to learn
more about LDAP schema and work harder at this to make my vision of
LDAP-authentication/address book a reality.

If you find something that is simple and capable, please let me know
your success story.
