Both the BIOS and the disk. The BIOS checks the disks' SMARTs (I'm too 
witty for words) as part of the POST. Using the smartmon tools, which I
never did until I got the initial notification from the BIOS, I learned 
more about what the problem is.

Just got back from CompUSA with a new Seagate Barracuda 160GB ATA 100
drive. That should hold me for a few weeks.

The (first) lesson I've learned from this episode is to become more
familiar with the smartmon tools and to run the self-test (smartctl -t
<device>) regularly to create a log so I can catch failures sooner.
