CentOS problem with sound card

I posted this to the CentOS list, but no response (too few users
there), so I'll try again here. The workaround I have in mind should
be common to CentOS/Fedora/RH.
I'm using a builtin sound card supported by the alsa snd_intel8x0
module. On FC3 the card works fine, but on CentOS I get an old
familiar problem (I have encountered the same problem on gentoo). All
of the aforementioned systems use udev. For some reason (unknown to
me), the udev/hotplug/??? combination fails to generate the /dev/xxx
entries required for the sound mixer on CentOS and Gentoo but not on
FC3. I pursued this at length in the past, but never got an
explanation. The workaround on Gentoo is to preload the modules
snd_seq_oss snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss. This is done by listing the
modules in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6. This causes the modules
to be loaded prior to bringing up udev.
How can this be accomplished on a RH type system?
Another possibility is the kernel. FC3 is using a 2.6.10 kernel;
CentOS has an older 2.6.9 kernel. I doubt that this is the problem.
