For those of you in the Grand Rapids area who are unable to break away
from work and travel to a SANS event, the Local Mentor Program has brought

this popular class to you. If you are interested in understanding how
hackers are able to penetrate your network, or how to stop them, I'd
love to have you in the class.

Hello:

We are pleased to announce that the popular SANS Hackers Techniques,
Exploits and Incident Handling course returns to Grand Rapids, in
our local mentor format, beginning on Tuesday, May 3.

This SANS "Hackers Techniques" course will be led by SANS
local mentor Matthew Carpenter. To register, please go to:
http://www.sans.org/local/details.php?nid=976.

The Local Mentor Program is designed for professionals who are seeking
a flexible alternative to SANS' popular six-day conferences. This
program enables students to participate in SANS training, without
the expense and inconvenience of travel or taking time out of the
workday and the advantage of a small classroom setting. There will
be no more than 15 students in this class.

SANS Hacker Techniques, Exploits and Incident Handling is one of our
most popular courses. It addresses the latest cutting-edge insidious
attack vectors and the oldie-but-goodie attacks that are still so
prevalent. Instead of merely teaching a few hack-attack tricks, this
course includes a time-tested, step-by-step process for responding to
computer incidents, a detailed description of how attackers undermine
systems so you can prepare, detect, and respond to them, and a hands-on
workshop for discovering holes before the bad guys do.

Additionally, the SANS Hacker Techniques course explores the
legal issues associated with responding to computer attacks,
including employee monitoring, working with law enforcement, and
handling evidence. This course will provide all the training and
support you need to attempt the GCIH certification. For complete
information on this class, and to register, please visit
http://www.sans.org/local/details.php?nid=976.

A frequent question is whether this is a self-study or a live course
led by a Local Mentor? The answer is "both".

Think of this course as a seminar, rather than a lecture course.
Students study SANS Hacker Techniques, Exploits and Incident Handling
course books at their own pace. Each week, students meet with other
professionals in the area and SANS Local Mentor Matthew Carpenter,
who will lead class discussions, provide hands-on demonstrations,
point out the most salient features, and answer questions. His goal
is to help you grasp the more difficult material, master the exercises,
and prepare you for the GCIH certification.

Your mentor will be Matthew Carpenter. Beginning with programming
an IBM PC back in 1981, Matthew's passion for bending computers to
his will has lead down an interesting career path. Having earned
his Bachelors in Computer Science in 1997, Matthew joined the job
force as a Technical Trainer/Network Consultant. Accomplished as
a Certified Network Engineer (CNE) and soon after as a Certified
Network Instructor (CNI) he learned the value of deterministic and
secure computing. Supporting Microsoft servers caused him to nearly
complete his MCSE before diverting his attentions elsewhere.

Having learned enough Unix in College to read email and use MUDDs,
Matthew picked up Linux in 1998 and found Caldera OpenLinux to be
both user-friendly and stable. After obtaining his CCNA and spending
3 years in telecomm supporting authentication, remote access, and
access control systems he joined the IT Security Services team where
he could do more damage. He promptly obtained the GIAC Certified
Incident Handler (GCIH) certification and is currently working on
the Forensic Analysis (GCFA) certification. Matthew's enjoys helping
others understand the emerging Internet Threat landscape. In his own
words, "There's nothing like seeing a Windows C: prompt on your Linux
box to make the threats real to you."

To register, please go to:
https://www.sans.org/registration/register.php?conferenceid=976.

As mentioned above, the tuition fee includes your GCIH certification
attempt. How important is a GIAC certification? We want to make
sure you are aware of the GIAC job board on the GIAC website,
http://www.giac.org. You will see the job board in the upper right
hand side of the page, with jobs listed in a matrix by state.

We receive several positive comments about the value of listening to
the mp3 version of the webcasts and instructor audio for each class.
Did you know that SANS is selling 15 GB Apple iPods for $235 in
our online store? You will not find a better price anywhere on
the web. The new mini iPods store one fourth the number of songs
and cost $249, so you can see, this is a nice deal. To order, go
to https://store.sans.org/store_item.php?item=146.

If you have any questions, please send an email to lmp at sans.org.
