need help w/ TUN

I've recompiled my kernel with Tun/Tap support, and /dev/net/tun is there and 
correct. However, when I do:
ifconfig tun0 192.168.1.99

I get:
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
tun0: unknown interface: No such device


WTF is going on? And no, this isn't for UML.
