That is because you are too logical. Google has just waged an amazing
advertising campaign, in order to make a huge presence in an already
saturated market. Did they use TV, Movie spots, or trade rags? nay.
They used Network Marketing and the power of limited supply to create a
demand.

My esteemed colleague (and technical lead of the email team for a multi
billion dollar international corporation just came running down to tell
me that he finally had a GMail account. This, the same man who
lambastes people for using such non-corporate-standard email as Yahoo
and Hotmail. He was giddy and proud to display his conquest. Why?
Because you can't just go sign up for one. Someone must first invite
you (of course, the NetworkPunk googlegroups site is a great place to
score an invite for any and all).
The perceived limited supply coupled with the idea that getting in on a
Beta is like freely getting something you might otherwise have to pay
for has worked brilliantly!

Some people don't even know what a GMail account *is*, but they want one.

How else would Google gain anything more than measley market-share when
Yahoo, Hotmail, and others already have free offerings? Brilliant Job,
Google. Brilliant.

Now if only SuSE/Novell/IBM can do so well. Two of those have proven
inable to sell lifesavers to a diabetic.

| I happen to be VERY proud of the fact that I have 0 gmail invites.
That would
| mean I DON'T have a gmail account...
|
| Regards,
| Tim (who fails to see the attraction of a gmail account)
