Hey Ajai, that's one of the only things you've said incorrectly that
I've seen.

I don't even know if Linux *can* do NetBEUI, let alone be a good idea.
NetBEUI is that nonroutable not-IP protocol which NetBIOS was run over
top of before MS/IBM took it to the TCP/IP world.

I believe what you are looking for is NetBIOS, which can be layered over
top of just about any protocol (although TCP/IP is the most common these
days).

Samba or NFS should work fine from the Mac, as should Appletalk-Over-TCP
(which I recommend far more than straight AppleTalk).

Tony, Once SAMBA is set up, you're not that far from being done. In
fact, Samba typically comes with a config that shares out personal
directories for whoever connects. For example. I'm running Windows or
Linux (doesn't matter) and I browse to a Samba server (let's say, using
Konqueror's SMB:// protocol handler). If I use my login ID
(smb://matt@smbserver) or if guess accounts are turned off for Samba, I
should be prompted for a password. Once I authenticate, I should see
anything available to the public, to my Groups, and to my user ID (ie.
my home directory).

Safari is Basically Konqueror so I would not be a bit surprised if Apple
kept the KIO_SLAVEs in place for SMB as well.

NOTE: Samba will most likely be set up to do Microsoft's password
encryption. This means that /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow will not be
enough for you. You should run another tool (smbpasswd) to create your
user ID in the Samba password store. The user also should be in
/etc/passwd and /etc/shadow:

legolas:/home/matt/Zaurus-050131 # useradd dipwap
legolas:/home/matt/Zaurus-050131 # passwd dipwap
Changing password for dipwap.
New password:
Re-enter new password:
Password changed

legolas:/home/matt/Zaurus-050131 # smbpasswd -a dipwap
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Added user dipwap.

Samba.org has a couple great documents, one of which is the official
Samba HOWTO's. Definitely worth the read. Don't go spending money yet.
~ I guess it's ok if it pad's O'Reilly's pockets. Lord knows we want
them to stay in business (and interested in OSS stuff ;)
