In order for your Linux box to provide a service to the Mac is must be
running a server. So, to do FTP you will need an FTP server running on the
Linux box. (Same for Samba, or NFS, or AppleTalk, whatever).

BTW, I thought mounting FTP shares on the Mac desktop gave you read-only
access to the FTP site?
