newbie network question

I would like the entire linux box to appear on the Mac, much as I would 
mount a device such as a drive.  And vice versa.  On the Mac, one can 
"connect to server" and the various components that are part of the 
network are supposed to "appear" in a window.  But my linux box does 
not.  No surprise, for I have done nothing to make the linux box 
"visible" (I have opened no ports or such on the linux box).  You can 
clearly see that I am clueless about this and need a pointer about what 
to read as a start.
