I just love my Thinkpad R40! It works really well on Linux now.
Previously there were issues with ACPI and when the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels
first came out, there were some stability issues with Java and ACPI
(IIRC), but it looks like everything works fine now. Not sure about
Lenovo, though, because I haven't tried the newer models. TheT series
Thinkpad that I briefly had at work was really remarkable too -- I was
really sad to have to give it up.
The best thing about the Thinkpad IMHO is the keyboard, which is the
most comfortable and durable I have ever used, and I have used Dell,
Toshiba, Fujitsu, Acer (most uncomfortable keyboard) and Asus (my
current workhorse). And the T series keyboard is better than the R or G
series.
The only thing bad about Thinkpads is the battery life. After a few
months, the battery-life drops off dramatically.
