Bonding with crossover cables?

Anybody here using bonded nics with only crossover cables, no hubs or 
switches?

I find it necessary to speed up the connections between two servers, bonding 
is the way to go and I was wondering if hub/switch is required? It has to be 
done in a low budget environment... Seems odd that I've never tried this 
before...
