Not that it matters, but are you sure its not Whitebox 4? I thought
that Whitebox was based off of RHEL versioning, in which case
RHEL4=2.6.9 kernel.

Editing fstab & grub.conf always worked for me. What exactly does this
kernel panic look like, and how exactly are you altering grub.conf and
fstab?
