I knew there was something like that available.

I'm working on something now where our client's machines connect
back to our servers every fifteen minutes using xmlrpc to an
https server here which tracks their last connection time and the
REMOTE_ADDR that apache sees on the connection.  This makes it
easy to see when a machine has last checked in, and whether the
IP address has changed necessitating a DNS update.
