I think before I spent a lot of money on webcams, I would find out a little 
more...  My HP4000 network printer will sometimes go into 'mull mode'  where 
you can send printouts to it and the only thing that happens is that the 
'receiving output' light will go on for a few seconds and then go out.  
Turning the printer off/on will cure the problem because the printer needs to 
be reset.   That would be hard to catch on a webcam.
