These are types of servers. I mean server location. The imap server is
(in the last squirrelmail I used) a global setting - not per user. So
all users had to have their imap server the same. Only the account on
the server is different for each user. It is this I am wondering about.

Not at all. We have imap servers in various locations around the
country. We like it that way. So, my imap server is stockholm.opq.se,
while those in a southern office have linkoping.opq.se. And so on. (In
fact, we may be decreasing the number if servers, but that is not really
the point...)
