Upgrade to the Latest Version of MIT Kerberos on RHEL3.1

I have a Redhat Enterprise Linux Box at work which I have winbind
authentication running successfully to handle remote logins via a
kerberised version of telnet which is at version:
krb5-devel-1.2.7-19
krbafs-utils-1.1.1-11
pam_krb5-1.70-1
krbafs-1.1.1-11
krbafs-devel-1.1.1-11
krb5-libs-1.2.7-19
krb5-workstation-1.2.7-19
This version of kerberos leaves masses of errors in the Windows 2k3
Domain Controllers Event Logs.
I have successfully installed the latest version of MIT Kerberos 1.4.1
on a debian box and this box no longer generates error messages.
However this was done as a bodgy *overwrite* to the current kerberos
install. I would like for the Kerberos install on the RHEL3.1 box to be
an upgrade. e.g. rpm -Uvh. But I first need to package the MIT Kerberos
in rpm format. I have tried checkinstall which works great but doesn't
seem to split the MIT Kerberos 1.4.1 installation into the Redhat
Component parts.
Anyone have any ideas on how I would package this so that it upgrades
the current installation?
