To get these things to work I usually have to do a couple of things:
- De-activate and re-activate Internet Connection Sharing on the *WAN*
port of the XP box. Make sure ICS is *not* enabled on the *LAN* port.
- Disable the XP firewall on the LAN port. (You can just disable it
altogether since you have a router that presumably is doing NAT and
therefore acts as a front line firewall against the wide Internet.
The ping should work once the firewall is disabled.
Caveat: Internet Connection Sharing and the XP firewall are notoriously
fickle things, they often don't work as advertised so some application
of "lather, rinse, repeat" is often called for. And don't forget to
reboot after doing the above as things that are supposed to take
immediate effect often don't and you want to make sure your settings
will survive a reboot while it's fresh on your mind.
