editing symlinks

This already existed, for historical reasons. But I want to avoid visual
cluttering of the directory /local/mail/jorge/IMAPdir/maildirs (LISTAS_
is not the only underscored link I want to get rid of).

I can easily make a perl script to remove the links and create new ones,
but just thought there might be a way to edit the contents of a symlink
file, rather than removing it.
