Local Firefox Builds Run Faster?

Could you elaborate on the "wierdities" that disappeared?

I abandoned Firefox/Thunderbird a while back for Mozilla 1.7 because I 
got tired of the frequent crashes and hangups. I much prefer F/T but 
decided I'd try it again at about v1.2.
