IMHO AMD64 is the only way to go for a 64-bit system, but I definitely am no
expert.
I started up a new AMD64 server using a Tyan S2882G3NR (Thunder SK8) MB a few
months ago and have had no problems at all. My only complaint is with the
onboard SATA RAID controller chipset -- it isn't worth spit for Linux (can't
say that I would recommend it for Windows, either.) If you want RAID, either
do it in software or invest in a good hardware RAID card.
Like you, I have had good experience with ASUS MB's, as well. I have a
half-dozen here around the office, but they all are Athlon XP's, not
Opterons, so I can't say how they would be for 64-bit.
