I have two work stations.  One has an Antec tower on a low table next to 
the monitor/keyboard.
Its noise it not objectional because its location directs most of the 
fan noise away.  (I did move the front fan to the back though.  This box 
has two aux fans below the PS blowing air out.)

My other station requires me to put the CPU on the same table with the 
monitor/keyboard, and this is where I have the problem.  I replaced a 
noisy ink-jet printer with a laser last year.  My "office" is too small, 
and no other location is practical.  I installed an Antec smart fan in 
the front of the box, and this helps a bit, but not enough.

NB I will probably recommission my up-brained Compaq (K6-III+); last 
night I upgraded Libranet 2.8.1 (2.4.21)to the 2.4.27 kernel and 
compiled it for K6-x support; performance i.e. KDE startup time, 
improved very noticeably.
