Greetings,
I don't know any jokes so I'll tell a story.
I took my trash to the transfer station on Saturday and spotted a
full size tower 10 feet down at the bottom of a dumpster. Hey, I
thought: maybe the power supply is a good atx one I could use
in the pentium II I rescued from the rubbish heap the week before.
I borrowed a rake and fished it up. As I lifted, the bent up cover
fell off. Oh good. It's the right power supply. I'll take it home and
pull it out. I look at the rest of the boxen. A socket 7 mobo, the
processor still in it, an amd k6-400. Hey, that's 50 faster than I'm
running now. An agp video card, a cheapo sound card, 10 gig
hard drive too. Even the memory is still in it. 64mb.
Hmm.
What are the chances someone would just dump a working boxen.
And what are the chances it would still work after a drop to the
hard bottom of a dumpster. Plus it had rained the night before.
I dried it out, cleaned the crud out of the fans and vents, and
plugged it in. Fans turned, lights started blinking, a beep was
heard and up comes w98 with a screen full of aol icons.
Damn, another box to put linux on. Now I need a power supply
and a cover.
Chris
