Update to Xorg and font spacing is weirdly double spaced

I just assume that if I've been playing with my install and done 
something radical like a new installation of X.org that it was me... 
Funny how evidence that seemingly points to my changes works out to be 
something else. Probably why I'm becoming more and more reticent to 
point to a particular cause for problems because I'm so often wrong 
until I find the REAL reason.
