Using printserver hw under Linux?

We're using a Hawking HPS1P. It seems to work with any OS that natively
will print to LPR--which took care of Linux and Windows, as we print
through a Linux/Samba print server on our network. That should also deal
with MacOS X. And it reportedly does IPP, which should take care of recent
Microsof OSs, right?
My problems were that I initially wanted to use it under Windows NT and
MacOS 9. MacOS would see it under Appletalk, but it printed garbage. It
probably could have been sorted out, but NT was also a problem. The
problem with Windows NT was that I had several clients printing using
another NT box as a server--but I also had a HP JetDirect printer installed
on the server. I found that when I installed the Hawking client the HP one
would no longer work. At $50.00 each, I could have simply gone with
Hawking devices for both, but I still needed to deal with the Macs. So we
went ahead and bought a new HP internal one (about $300.00), as an external
HP one (under $200.00) wouldn't do it for the Macs either. The Macs
wouldn't be such a problem if we could go to MacOS X, but they're used for
two applications and one won't run on it. (The other one uses a browser,
and would benefit from using a newer one than MacOS 9 has--but if we just
did that we could use Linux for these systems.)
This one is a single parallel port version, really small, but they also
have a USB one and one with multiple ports.
