Ok, so now you guys got even me out of lurk mode ;)
I am in my mid-forties, and have been a software engineer since 1981 (luckily
still employed). I have worked on proprietary pdp-11s, writing in Macro-11. I
have worked on TRS-80s, writing in Basic (first job!). Most of my career, I
have been working in Unix environments, and was involved in doing GUI
development from the early X11 (X10) days. Before that - Sunview (anyone
remember that primitive windowing system? It predates Windows!). Right now I
do most of my development in C++, but have worked in Pascal, Modula-2,
Smalltalk, to name a few.
I've done some, but very little Windows programming. When on Windows, I've
tried to use languages like Smalltalk, where I am sheilded from M$ interfaces.
But I have to say, for the last 4-5 years, I have been able to work in a Linux
environment and am thrilled to be a part of this emerging OS/environment.
Watching its evolution has been interesting, and of course, given my
experience, the environment is one that I feel infinitely more comfortable
with.
I run a Linux network at home (only the kids insist on Windows on their laptop)
and find I never need Windows. At work, I am a rebel - the only developer who
has a Linux desktop. I try to influence others, but they tend to want to use
what they are given (status quo kind of mentality). My work laptop has to be
Windows :(, but I can run cygwin which gives my my *nix that I seem to crave ;)
I enjoy reading the digests from this group and contribute when I can. Lately
I haven't had much time to play with my network, but hope to get back to it a
bit over the winter.
And yes - I am a Red Sox fan, born and bred (I live near Boston).
Ciao,
Susan
