David Kurt Lonnie or other

I have installed gentoo on and seagate drive 30g in size, the fact that I am
using gentoo is not important, it is the kernel. I sent the following to gentoo
list and got only one reply and that is on the fstab file.

After working with this for a couple of days I have moved to the 2.4.26 kernel
and the system comes up and loads very nicely. it appears that something is not
reading the hard drive properly at system boot up and storing the info into
/proc/ide/ide0/hda/settings for the 2.6.8 kernel. I am using grub on this drive
and still have the kernell image and initrd images for 2.6.8 kernel in /boot.

is there something in the new 2.6.8 kernel that may not be able to read this
drive, made in 1999-2000 time frame.

Gentoo List msg:
I have installed the stage-3.i686*.tar.gz livecd. All went well untill I try to
boot the system. The proc/ide/ide0/hda/settings have all of the wrong values, and
the system can not load the /dev/hda into the system as it can not figure out
what it is. When I reboot with cdrom and mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo -
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot - mount -t procproc /mnt/gentoo/proc all works
as expected. /deev/hda is reconized proberly. the ide driver for livecd is 1.17
and the new system is 1.18. /dev/hda3 is reiserfs and /boot is ext2. This system
is a pIII coppermine 2533 mHz 756 meg of ram.
