One reason not to go with Xorg-x11

Having a spare day to fool around with my linux game machine.... I decided to
try moving from xfree-4.3.0-r7 to xorg-6.8.0-r1 and see what new features
were awaiting me....

After backing up my highly tuned XF86Config file, I went about the process...
unmerge xfree, emerge xorg-x11...

Right off the get go, I ahd problems with my all favorite "legacy" game, Quake
III Arena. I'm only able to play a few seconds of the fight and the video
locks up solid. I can telnet/putty into the desktop and try to kill off X,
but it just refuses to die. So, I'm left with a live desktop, just no gui or
local xterm logins... That sucks. After a ton of googling, all kinds of quake
hacking... I gave up.

The ultimate fix was re-install xfree. I'm back to battling my neighbors and
his kids like "normal"...

So, anyone hear of a similar situation? That is, xorg and quake3 not mixing it
up well?

Thanks, Jerry.
