Strange. I downloaded the whole tree from ftp.gwdg.de to local disk and 
installed from there (for some reason ftp.suse.com is much slower for me). It 
seemed to work OK, with the exception of a few packages I needed to install later.

So maybe I'll try that on a more important machine after watching the mailing
