And, when I ran fsck.reiserfs on a couple of the partitions created by 
qtparted I got errors, so ran mkreiserfs and checked again, coming up 
clean. I'm afraid at one point I mixed my tools, trying bootit-ng, then 
partition magic, then qtparted, which undoubtedly totally confused my 
poor computer. Oh, well.... at least it's working (somehow!).
