yeah, that's on the list. i need also to do the half-recompile of some 
kernel modules in getting the dvi-d connection to the monitor to work. 
hoping to do it in a sufficiently orderly fashion that i get a sense of 
what is doing what to what. not that this will enable me to control any 
of it, mind you . . .
