I can't really say as I haven't done any research on it, but I seem to
remember reading a thread on the AMD64 mailing list that discussed this. I
want to say that some features were reduced or eliminated from the amd64 vs.
the Opteron that left it less powerful, but less expensive -- things like
less cache memory, etc. but I really don't know for sure. But, I suspect that
for normal desktop work the amd64 still would be a real screamer.
Check out the AMD64 mailing list: http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/
Let us know what you learn. I'm still running a PIII, here, as my desktop and
I'm hoping to upgrade next year and it either will be to the amd64 or the
Opteron.
