Advise to reinstall XP with Linux - Success

I've never used knoppix for rebuilding lilo but I've done the same thing using 
the SuSE rescue system:

1) Boot knoppix
2) mount /dev/<your-root-disk>  /mnt
3) chroot /mnt
4) mount  /dev/<your-boot-disk>  /boot
5) Run  lilo


Should do the trick.
