xscreensaver and xorg problems

Just curious. I have an annoying little problem with xscreensaver and
xorg that I've been pursuing on the gentoo lists and bugzilla. Certain
screensavers (BouncingCow is one) and glxgears crash the X server.
I've tried a number of recommended solutions (lots of recompiles,
different versions of xorg, sxcreensaver, gtk+, glibc options, etc.),
but no joy.
Just wondering if anyone has has encountered this type of problem?
I'm in the process of recompiling xorg for debugging in the hopes of
getting a back trace and module name.
I have a SIS650 onboard video (which has been quite reliable up to
now), kernel 2.6.9, xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1, xscreensaver-4.16,
glibc-2.3.4.20041102, gcc-3.4.3. I realize in advance that this is a
newer toolchain than most of you are running. The problem exists on
xorg 6.7.x as well. The problem occurs with or without DRI and GLX.
Googling brings up some hits for SIS based cards, but nothing that
really matches.
