Well, you need to look at this list real hard.  I have my name on
three published books (and if I can find a _decent_ publisher that
fulfills their part of the contract I'll publish again).  I have
written for LJ since 1996.  (And I'd have said infamous ... )

Kurt Wall also has some books published.

Dennis Powell is a well-known and well-respected IT journalist.

And there are several more on this list.  Our list, though not large
number-wise, has a disproportionately high number of OSS contributors,
not just users.  I suspect our median age is several years older than
the average geek list out there as well.  Tolerance is something that
comes with maturity.  How often are folks flamed here?
