Well, after replacing a bad memory chip, I'm back on the air with my
desktop box.

This afternoon I completed the last wrinkles in getting native udev to
work. Gentoo has an intemediate udev which saves/restores a /dev tarball
at shutdown/boot. After removing that, I had to do some tinkering to get
alsa (actually hotplug) to create /dev/dsp, etc.

Following that I converted to xorg-x11, and boy was that a piece of
cake. Gentoo at its best. And yes, it's true, X starts up up a second
or two faster than in the old days. Everything I use including mplayer
seems not to notice the difference.

I'll check out the fonts tomorrow.
