IIRC, when I worked with LFS I usually lost things when mounting was
inconsistent (something else is mounted on the file system where I stored
them, or else I failed to re-mount the device on which they were written).
I'd check the history file for the user to see what commands you typed and
see if something is mounted now that wasn't then or if you failed to mount
something this time.

Failing that, I also recall something about not being able to locate some
things until I got into the LFS install environment because the paths were
greatly changed.  The directory you see in LFS (while still installing) is
not the directory you will see if you are booted from another OS.  Changing
root locations when you get into LFS accounts for it, but like you, my
memory isn't all I seem to recall it used to be.
