Vendor syntax error

  I have an HP 6100 scan-jet scanner running off a scsi controler. Now the gimp runs
xsane to aquire the scan, but there is no /proc listing. using gentoo system with
2.4.23 kernel and resierfs. Should I see something. many thanks
