Sun's JDK & Athlons

Hi Lonni !

I think the original developers of Java had a great idea, but failed to
anticipate how things would become so complicated (not their fault, just
unfortunate). Now, it depends on which libraries you use, which kernel
versions, and even which Java SDK you use. Ironically, Sun's own Java VM
seems to have more problems than IBM's, looking at the development
history. But if you went with IBM's, immediately, you run up against
CLASSPATH differences which I sincerely hope is not the beginning of a fork.

If you're running Tomcat, there is also the issue of Tomcat versions --
sometimes the newer ones have serious bugs. So, no end to problems, eh?

All that said, there are some reasons why I use Java and Linux, which I
think is unique to my situation: because I've always worked for smallish
companies (except my first job, which was in a factory), IT budgets have
always been small or non-existent. The only way to develop useful stuff
is using free technologies. But I believe you need to also keep an eye
on what makes money, and, until very recently, Java skills were in
demand. So, I chose Linux for the cost (and the philosophy), and Java
for more mundane reasons.

Anyway, if you're seeing anything strange with your Java app, or
supporting Tomcat, just post to the list ! If I haven't been recalled
for reservist training or hospitalised, I'll try to answer it.

Regards,
pascal chong
