Internet screwed up?

This brings up a question. I have been struggling with netdate. It has a
tendency to just hang waiting for a response from some time servers, never
seeming to time out. I also have heard it is deprecated. Is there a
viable, commandline alternative? NTPD is a bugger to get setup, at least
the times I have tried I have given up...
