But after all this fussing around, I too, downloaded Audacity (which 
required a whole boatload of additional GTK libraries).  But I also 
found something called Sound Studio which I think is even a little 
nicer than Audacity.  Has a nice VU meter so you can tell if you're 
overdriving something.  But I haven't tried editing yet.
