Well, that and the fact that Java was written to be thread-friendly and
robust, which means that there are some built-in functions which take
longer to process than others (all synchronized methods, for example)
because of the overhead of blocking.
Add to that the fact that some JVM's stink and you have a better
picture. Well written apps on a good JVM can achieve near-C speed.
Poorly written apps on bad JVM's run slower than most scripts.
