gimp xscan

I've tried just about everything I can think of 
but I still do not have
the scanner listed under acquire in GIMP. I've 
followed the usual:
ln -s /usr/bin/xsane ~/.gimp-1.2/plug-ins/
this should appear in the GIMP menus 
Files/Acquire, but it doesn't.
After making the symbolic link from the plug-ins 
to xsane I deleted
~/.gimp-1.2/pluginrc and started GIMP, no scanner. 
I must be missing
something here just not sure what that would be. I 
can scan from xsane
and from kooka as root or user, so the scanner 
does work on this system.
The scanner is Microtek ScanMaker E3 scsi (Adaptec 
7880U) and works on
everything including OO 1.1 but Gimp. Any pointers 
welcome.
